American Military Operation on Caracas Stokes Anxieties of Potential Danish Territory Annexation.

The recent American bombardment in the South American nation and the capture of its leader have renewed apprehension regarding America's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's base have reportedly focused on the resource-rich island in the wake of the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Merely a short time after the start of the Caracas campaign, a prominent conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a senior White House adviser, posted a symbolic image. The picture showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word message: "SOON."

This overt suggestion to claim the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the NATO alliance, provoked swift and firm condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to work together as such. American security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally highlighted that Denmark had significantly increased its defence spending recently, earmarking a substantial sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "Furthermore, we expect complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he emphasized.

Political Appointments and Strategic Goals

The situation were further exacerbated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly thanked the president, stating it was an "privilege" to work in a unpaid capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's decisive move, connecting it to the wider "war on drugs."

Since returning to office, the American leader has consistently alarmed European partners with his stated interest in Greenland. The island is considered vitally important for defence and potential resource extraction. It currently houses the most northerly US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant media interview, the president refused to rule out the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes during intensifying great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Resistance

In reaction to this persistent "drumbeat" of intent, Danish security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of both Greenland delivered a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a complex picture. While a vast majority of the island's residents seek self-rule from Copenhagen, there is also scant desire to join the United States. The island has had the option to declare independence for many years.

Expert View: A Plausible Scenario?

Military experts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in military analysis admitted she had once dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could intervene about it," she concluded.
