Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
